Lahore, Pakistan, recorded the highest air pollution levels in the world today, topping the global Air Quality Index (AQI) with a score of 204. Meanwhile, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, ranked third.
According to Switzerland-based air quality monitoring company IQAir, Dhaka’s air quality was classified as ‘unhealthy’ with an AQI score of 181 as of 8 AM on Saturday (February 15).
Among the most polluted areas in Dhaka, Hemayetpur, Savar, reported the worst air quality with a hazardous AQI score of 334.
Several other areas also recorded alarming levels of pollution. Eastern Housing had a ‘very unhealthy’ AQI of 296, followed by Shanta Forum (235), Grace International School (216), and Kalyanpur (212). Additionally, the air quality in the US Embassy area (199), West Nakhalpara (197), Gulshan Lake Park (186), Pirerbagh Railway Line (186), and ICDDRB in Mohakhali (184) fell into the ‘unhealthy’ category.
An AQI score between 101 and 200 is considered ‘unhealthy’ for sensitive groups, while 201 to 300 is categorized as ‘very unhealthy.’ A score between 301 and 400 is deemed ‘hazardous,’ posing serious health risks to residents.
Dhaka has long struggled with severe air pollution, which continues to pose significant health concerns for its residents.
