Bangladesh officially signed the OIC Labour Centre Statute today at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) headquarters in Jeddah.
Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain signed the Statute on behalf of the Bangladesh government during a formal ceremony, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Dr. Hussain was welcomed by OIC Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs, Dr. Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo. Prior to the signing, the two held a meeting where they discussed strengthening cooperation in labour rights, trade, and investment.
The OIC official said the significance of the Statute in promoting labour welfare among member states. Dr. Hussain noted Bangladesh’s commitment to international labour standards and shared progress in workplace safety, wage reform, and worker benefits.
He also said OIC officials on Bangladesh’s growing shipbuilding industry, which is creating employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the OIC, M J H Jabed, and senior labour ministry officials were also present at the event.
