Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said that foreign media and the Awami League are spreading misinformation to destabilise the country.
He made the remarks on Friday (May 2) morning while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled "Bangladesh After the July Revolution: Challenges for the Media," organised by the Chattogram Press Club and Chattogram Metropolitan Journalists’ Union at the July Biplob Memorial Hall.
“People now watch videos more than they read news. This is being used to spread lies,” he said.
He cited an example where Awami League supporters circulated a video claiming Jamaat activists were slaughtering a boy. “But it was later found to be a drug-related incident from Latin America. Still, people believed it.”
He warned that such false, missing, and disinformation are being used to create clashes among political groups and social communities.
Shafiqul Alam also said the government will seek UN support to evaluate the role of journalists over the past 15 years, including during the last three national elections.
“We will request the United Nations to form a panel of experts to investigate how journalism was practised during major national events and elections and to publish a full report,” he said.
