Sari Diplomacy: Another angle of Sushma’s BD tour

DHAKA: Perhaps, Sari, the mostly used dress for the ‘Bangali’ women, which also make them most adorable. After returning of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj from Bangladesh, the dress is getting more attention as it has already changed the trend of diplomacy.

About their External Affairs Minister’s first visit to Bangladesh, Indian influential news portal ‘The Times of India’ publishes a report on Saturday morning titled ‘Sushma in Bangladesh: Saris add feminine touch to diplomacy’ where they indicates ‘Sari’ as one of the game changers.

The report said that Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who has visited Bangladesh for 3-day started from June 25 and left Dhaka on Friday noon, met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her daughter Saima Wazed Hossain, Bangabandhu’s younger daughter Sheikh Rehana, former foreign minister Dipu Moni, Opposition Leader Raushon Ershad and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Surprisingly, all of them took ‘Sari’ as gift for Sushma.

Moreover, before setting off for Dhaka, Sushma Swaraj stopped at a famous store in New Delhi to choose a cream coloured South Indian silk sari for Sheikh Hasina, knowing well the Bangladesh PM's preferred colour, Indian media reported.

The Times of India said that Issues of visas, buses and regional security were wrapped in saris at that diplomatic tour.

In two days, the women leaders of the two South Asian neighbours laced hard diplomacy with a feminine touch, a domain where men cannot enter, they added.

However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gifted Sushma an exquisite "Dhakai Jamdani" sari while Khaleda her double.

The 10th National Parliament’s Opposition Leader Raushon Ershad also gifted Sushma ‘Jamdanis’ but media couldn’t know how much were there.

Former foreign minister Dipu Moni, generally known for her exquisite taste, presented Sushma with another jamdani too.

Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, who is not a part of the sari diplomacy, also admitted that most members of the Indian delegation, including the men, returned home with "jamdani" saris.
