JAMALPUR: Seven people, including three members of a family, were killed and one injured as a train hit an auto-rickshaw carrying them in Melandah uapzila of the district on Monday.
Of the deceased of the family were identified as Jarina Begum, 55, wife of one Rais Uddin, daughter Brishti, 13 and son Hasmat Ali, also the auto-rickshaw driver, hailed from Shyampur of the upazila.
Other victims were Morsheda, 45, wife of one Sohel, from Balurchar area, Hasna, 35, wife of one Farid Uddin, Shukuri, 55, from Phulbaria and Tultuli, 45, wife of one Sunit, from Kazirpara of the upazila.
Witnesses said a Dhaka-bound commuter train hit a battery-run auto-rickshaw at Nayanagar level crossing around 2:15pm, leaving four people dead on the spot and injured four others critically.
Later, locals rescued the injured from the auto-rickshaw. Of them, two succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital while another one died at Jamalpur General Hospital.
Melandah Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Nasimul Haque told banglanews that of them, condition of an injured is critical.
Another injured person was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), he added.
