DHAKA: Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque said that mosque committees will be investigated and examined to hunt down whether they include any members who are supporters of militancy and anti-liberation elements.

The IGP came up with the assertion in a seminar “Role of Islam in Resisting Militancy: Bangladesh Perspective” at police headquarters in city on Thursday (December 17).

He also said, “Anti-militancy committee will be formed across the country, and both police and religious leaders (ulama) will be working together”.

Shahidul Haque further said detective police will have a close look on people who conduct suspicious activities that may lead to support militancy and anti-liberation elements.

He also added the militants are trying to kill and torture people in the name of Islam.

“They are conducting killings in the name of jihad. They are simply misrepresenting and misusing religion.”

He also seeks cooperation from the religious leaders in tackling the crisis.

The IGP also mentioned, the militants, who are currently under custody, were involved with the politics of Jamaat-Shibir.

In the seminar, additional IGP Mukhlesur Rahman, Dr Javed Patuari of Special Branch, DMP joint-commissioner Munirul Islam, Imam of Sholakia Idgah and Jamiatul Ulama’s chairmen Maulana Farid Uddin Masud, among others, were present among others at the seminar.
