Passengers suffer as fog halts ferry services

MANIKGANJ & MUNSHIGANJ:  Ferry services on Daulatdia-Paturia and Shimulia-Kawrakandi river routes have been suspended since Saturday dawn due to poor visibility caused by thick fog.

For dense fog and cold weather, drivers of hundreds of vehicles and thousands of passengers are facing immense sufferings.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Paturia office assistant general manager Mohiuddin Russel told banglanews that due to thickness of fog, even marking points and beacon lights are not visible on the both river routes.

So, ferry services have been suspended since 5:00am to avoid accident. Prior to that, five ferries including Ro-Ro Ferry Shahjalal, Birsrestha Motiur Rahman, Keramat Ali, and Utility Ferry Madhobilota were forced to anchor in the mid Padma.

On the other hand, BIWTC Mawa ghat manager M Giasuddin Patwari told banglanews that ferry services on Shimulia-Kawrakandi remained halted from 3:00am due to tick fog.

Ferry service on both routes will resume after density of fog decreases, said officials concerned.
