The Supreme Court on Monday upheld a High Court order that granted anticipatory bail to Toufique Imrose Khalidi, editor-in-chief of online news portal bdnews24.com, in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
An Appellate Division bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Imman Ali, passed the order dismissing a petition filed by the ACC that sought a stay on the HC bail order.
Lawyer Abdul Matin Khasru represented Khalidi while lawyer Khurshid Alam moved for the ACC in court.
Earlier on August 26, The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mostafizur Rahman granted eight-week anticipatory bail to Khalidi in the case.
On July 30, ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar Pradhan filed the case with its Dhaka Integrated Office-1 accusing Khalidi of acquiring wealth beyond his known sources of income.
According to the case documents, Khalidi possesses Tk42 crore in four accounts with HSBC, Eastern Bank, Southeast Bank and Mutual Trust Bank, for which the ACC said no legal source was found.
ACC investigation found that Khalidi has accumulated the wealth through fraud by creating forged documents.
