BNP leader Chand arrested

Rajshahi district unit Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) convenor Abu Sayeed Chand was arrested from the city on Thursday (May 25).

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police's (RMP) additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Rafiqul Alam confirmed the matter.

A Magura court on Wednesday (May 24) issued an arrest warrant against Rajshahi BNP Convener Abu Sayeed Chand in a case filed over threatening to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Magura Jubo League Convener Fazlur Rahman filed the case with the court of a magistrate under the Digital Security Act.

The court then issued the arrest warrant and directed police to record the complaint as a first information report.

On Friday, Chand reportedly threatened the prime minister at a public rally. A footage of his statement went viral on social media, triggering protests by the Awami League.

Besides, several cases were filed against Abu Sayeed Chand under the Anti-Terrorism Act for his alleged death threat to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, the ruling Awami League activists also hold demonstrations across the country protesting the death threat to Sheikh Hasina.

Abu Sayeed Chand reportedly made the threat at a rally organised by the BNP Rajshahi district and city units to demonstrate against harassment and arrests of the opposition activists in various fictitious cases and government corruption.
