The High Court has directed the government to bring all the cases filed against a BNP leader for issuing a "death threat" to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina before a single court in Rajshahi for trial.

The HC bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Showkat Ali Chowdhury issued the order on Sunday (July 16).

Currently, a total of 18 cases have been filed in 12 districts against Abu Sayeed Chand after he made a political speech in Rajshahi.

Besides, the court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned with the government to explain why filing multiple cases against Chand over his single speech should not be declared illegal and unconstitutional.

Earlier a writ petition was filed by Chand's daughter Shirin Aktar challenging the filing and initiation of multiple cases against him in connection with a single issue.

A Rajshahi court on May 30 placed BNP's district convener Abu Sayeed Chand on a three-day remand in a case filed on charges of issuing a ‘death threat’ to PM at a public rally.

Earlier on May 25, a Rajshahi court placed Abu Sayeed Chand on a five-day remand in the case. 

A Magura court on May 24 issued an arrest warrant against Abu Sayeed Chand in a case filed over threatening to kill Sheikh Hasina.

Magura Jubo League Convener Fazlur Rahman filed the case with the court of a magistrate under the Digital Security Act.

The court then issued the arrest warrant and directed police to record the complaint as a first information report.

Earlier on 19 May, Abu Sayeed Chand reportedly made the threat at a rally organised by the BNP Rajshahi district and city units to demonstrate against harassment and arrests of the opposition activists in various fictitious cases and government corruption.

Later, several cases were filed against Abu Sayeed Chand under the Anti-Terrorism Act for his alleged death threat to Sheikh Hasina.
