Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader has expressed unwavering confidence in the Election Commission (EC), saying that his party firmly believes in the commission's capabilities to hold the 12th parliamentary election in a free and fair manner.

He said: “Now, the Election Commission holds all authority to uphold law and order in the country throughout the election period. We have complete confidence in any decision that the commission may take.”

Quader made the statement on Saturday, a day after the EC called upon the home ministry to transfer officers-in-charge of all police stations across the country by December 5. 

Regarding the country's electoral atmosphere, Quader, who also serves as the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, said that the entire nation is eagerly waiting to cast votes in the election.

A total of 2,713 candidates from 32 registered political parties have filed nomination papers against 300 parliamentary seats to contest the 12th parliamentary elections slated for January 7, 2024.

Referring to the data, Quader said this year’s election is expected to be held in a festive mood, with a significant number of voter turnouts.

Pointing the finger at BNP, he said the upcoming general election cannot be foiled through resorting to acts of terrorism and enforcing hartal and blockade programmes in the country.

He alleged that certain political parties are engaged in anti-election activities, despite the readiness of the countrymen to exercise their franchise in the upcoming election.
