BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (December 7) failed to secure bail from the High Court in a case filed over the vandalism of the chief justice's residence on October 28.

The High Court bench issued a rule asking the state to explain in seven days why Fakhrul Islam should not be granted bail in the case.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin issued the rule following a bail petition filed by Fakhrul Islam.

Fakhrul Islam was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on October 29, in a case filed over the vandalism of the chief justice's residence during BNP-police clash in the capital on October 28.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police detained him from his Gulshan residence around 9:30am on October 29.

On October 28, Fakhrul Islam suspended the grand rally in the capital's Nayapaltan and announced the hartal.

BNP claimed that the rally was suspended as police fired rubber bullets, flash grenades and lobbed tear gas shells, forcing the BNP leaders and activists to leave the rally venue.
