BNP leader Hafizuddin files writ to go aboard

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Vice Chairman Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed has filed a writ petition with the High Court today (December 13) challenging the legality of government action that prevented him from travelling to India.

Hafizuddin filed the petition seeking an HC order upon the authorities concerned of the government to allow him to leave Bangladesh and then return from abroad.

His lawyer Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal confirmed the matter today.

The HC may hold hearing of the petition tomorrow, he added.

Earlier on December 12, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport immigration authorities barred Hafizuddin Ahmed from travelling to India for treatment.

The BNP leader made the allegation to reporters saying he was supposed to go to India along with his wife at 2:30pm by a flight of Air India.

He said, “After I arrived at the airport, they asked me to wait at the immigration. My wife was with me. She was allowed to go but I was barred from leaving the country.”

Hafiz Uddin said he was scheduled to undergo knee surgery at Delhi's Fortis Hospital on Wednesday.

When asked the reason, the BNP leader said immigration officials could not tell him any specific reason.
