The High Court today (December 17) set January 3 for BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's bail petition hearing in a case filed over the vandalism of the chief justice's residence on October 28.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin fixed the date on Sunday.

Earlier on December 7, the HC rejected the bail petition of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and issued a rule asking the government to explain why he should not be granted bail.

Besides, the government was asked to respond to the rule within a week.

Fakhrul Islam was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on October 29, in a case filed over the vandalism of the chief justice's residence during BNP-police clash in the capital on October 28.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police detained him from his Gulshan residence around 9:30am on October 29.

On October 28, Fakhrul Islam suspended the grand rally in the capital's Nayapaltan and announced the hartal.

BNP claimed that the rally was suspended as police fired rubber bullets, flash grenades and lobbed tear gas shells, forcing the BNP leaders and activists to leave the rally venue.
