The High Court on Wednesday (January 3) deferred till next week the hearing on the rule regarding BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's bail in a case filed over vandalising the chief justice's residence on October 28 last year.

The HC bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin deferred it following an appeal from Fakhrul's lawyers.

BNP's lawyers did not attend the bail hearing in the court as the party's court-boycott programme went on from 1 to January 7.

The High Court on December 17 last year, set January 3 for hearing on the rule regarding Fakhrul Islam's bail in a case filed over vandalism of the chief justice's residence on October 28.

Earlier on December 7 last year, the HC bench issued the rule, asking the state to explain in seven days why Fakhrul should not be granted bail in the case.

On October 29 last year, Fakhrul Islam was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on October 29 last year, in a case filed over the vandalism of the chief justice's residence during BNP-police clash in the capital on October 28.

Later, on December 3, Fakhrul Islam filed the bail petition with the HC through his lawyers, saying he was not involved in the vandalism of the chief justice's residence in any manner.
