Police have sent a former local Awami League leader, to jail through court in connection with the murder of Jamaat activist Shahabul Islam in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha.
Majnu Mia Hiro, 48, the former president of Bamandanga Union Awami League, was arrested from the Satgiri Hiro Bazar area of Bamandanga Union on Saturday (Nov 16) at around 9:45 pm.
He is the son of late Abdus Sattar Hiro from the same area.
On Sunday (Nov 17) afternoon, police produced him before a Gaibandha court, which sent him to Gaibandha District Jail, said Sundarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Abdul Hakim Azad.
OC Hakim Azad confirmed that Majnu is one of the named accused in the case filed over the murder of Shahabul Islam. Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid and arrested him.
According to case statement, on January 5, 2014, Shahabul was hacked to death with sharp weapons at a polling center at Manmoth Government Primary School during the national election.
On October 22 this year, 10 years after the incident, Shahabul's younger brother SM Shahjahan Kabir filed a case naming 79 people, including former MP Manzurul Islam Liton's wife and Sundarganj Upazila Awami League Vice-President Syeda Khurshid Jahan Smriti as the prime accused. The case also includes 40 to 50 unidentified individuals.
