The BNP has urged the interim government to hold the national election by August this year, emphasizing the move as crucial for the nation’s greater interest.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the plea while addressing a press conference at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
He said: “We believe the election can take place in the middle of this year, specifically between July and August.”
Fakhrul urged the interim government, the Election Commission, and political parties to take immediate steps to arrange the election by mid-year.
“With the Election Commission already formed and governance relatively stable, there is no reason to delay the election,” he said.
He further noted that the Election Reform Commission, established by the government, is expected to submit its report on Wednesday.
“In light of these developments, we see no justification for postponing the election further. Delays will only deepen the ongoing political and economic crises,” Fakhrul added.
He reiterated the party’s long-standing position that an elected government is indispensable for upholding democracy, describing it as the bedrock of the nation’s governance system.
