Former MP Mukti sent to jail after remand

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent former Narail-1 MP BM Kabirul Haque and Awami League central executive member Md Mozammel Haque to jail in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The duo had been on a six-day police remand after being arrested by Gulshan Police on September 24 from the Niketan area of the capital. The case relates to raising provocative slogans during a procession on September 22.

On Wednesday, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Md Sefatullah, rejected their bail pleas and ordered them to be sent to jail.

According to police, the protesters, including leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), marched on the southern bridge of Dr Fazle Rabbi Park around 1:30 pm on September 12. During the procession, they allegedly chanted slogans aimed at destabilizing the state and attempted to vandalize vehicles, creating public fear.

The case remains under investigation by Gulshan Thana police.
