Drought, Disaster, Deforestation and Development in Bangladesh

The concept of sustainable development is inseparably linked to the concept of environmental justice, generational obligation. It is because the acts we do and do not- have the affect on the lives of the future generation. It is worldwide acceptable that the people of today has obligation for the generation of the future.

We are duty bound to follow the obligation to make a world livable for the next generation. In addition to this, we the present generation is similarly obligated to perform the developmental activities for our own. But there is a conflict of development and environment. Thus it is the obligation of the present generation to ensure a sustainable development which will also ensure a sustainable environment for the generation of today and the generation to come.

The world is concerned about the impact of climate change and the issues related to it. Different parts of the world are already worried about the severe impact of the climate change. Countries like Bangladesh are already undergoing the severe brunt of climate change.

Research and studies are being carried out by think tanks and researchers in this arena. Almost all those studies show that Bangladesh is under extreme vulnerability of climate change. Because of its geographical locations and character the result is severe. Bangladesh is exposed to cyclone, tidal surge and some sorts of seasonable floods. Similarly it is equally exposed to drought, deforestation and salinity of soil. Severe water crisis is imminent within a decade or two.

So, we are standing on the top of a cliff of heavy environmental degradation.

All the above factors are further aggravated by the widespread poverty, large population base, lack of strong institutional mechanism to control and so on.

We are taking any step for disaster preparedness and climate vulnerability.

Worldwide climate change effects have already been summarized for by many countries. It has also forecast the effects on cross-boundary river flows. The effects of flood are also been identified but we could not still stand on the report to prepare for ourselves.

Our policy makers are yet to consider the actions for a warmer Bangladesh.

Fresh water availability is increasing at a very high level with huge intensity of natural disasters. We are yet to adapt a sustainable and long-term strategy to adjust for the world.
