Speakers at a seminar in Southeast University underscored the need for arbitration for reducing the backlogs of commercial cases in Bangladesh.
Arbitration has been overwhelmingly popular around the world because it helps to lessen undue delay and cost of commercial suits apart from securing confidentiality of the parties, the speakers also observed terming arbitration as the buzzing solution in commercial disputes.
The Department of Law & Justice of Southeast University (SEU) in collaboration with Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) organized the seminar on ‘Arbitration’ held at the SEU seminar hall on March 30, 2013.
Dr. Toufiq Ali, the incumbent Chief Executive of BIAC and former Panel Judge of World Trade Organization (WTO) presented the keynote in the seminar.
Dr. Ali in his keynote highlighted the two Models of arbitration namely Ad Hoc and Institutional one as well as their suitability and relics of success.
He also reoriented the founding history and pivotal role of BIAC, its justifiability and success in collaborating and holding of different sessions of arbitration by many recognized arbitrators of the country coupled with its benevolent functions of organizing seminars and training for the potential arbitrators.
Dr. Ali who was also the ambassador of Bangladesh in Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland answered the questions of students at the end of the keynote presentation.
Professor Dr. ANM Meshquat Uddin, Pro Vice Chancellor of SEU was the chief discussant while Professor Dr. Anwar Hossain, Vice Chancellor of the university presided over the Seminar. Md. Asaduzzaman, Chairman, Department of Law & Justice delivered the address of welcome.
A H M Nurul Islam, Director of BIAC, along with counsel and assistant counsel of BIAC attended the seminar. Deans, chairmen of different departments, teachers, around 150 senior students of the Department of Law & Justice were present in the seminar.
