April 23 is the date of birth and death of many authors like Cervantes, Shakespeare, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and so on.

 

UNESCO, has fixed the day as the world copyright day to mark their contribution to the human civilization. Their contribution to the progress of humanity is immense which is acknowledged especially on this day.

 

The day was initially observed in Catalonia as Saint George’s Day. On this day, people used to offer rose as a gift for each book sold to the buyers. But, today, it is observed as a right of the intellectual property worldwide.

However, the theme of the copyright this year is books and translation.

The concept of copyright is a legal one. But it is not only an idea rather a legal right ensured by almost every countries of the world. This right is of national and international in nature. It is a sort of recognition given to the creator for their intellectual creations. This exclusive right belongs to the creator only except some exception. This right is not for unlimited period.

It is the right to copy, to be credited for the work and to be financially benefited from the work as well. Some features of the copyright law is unique everywhere in the world and the period of protection of the copyright is also unique irrespective of territorial boundary. The UNESCO and other related organizations are celebrating the day with due importance of the event. The protection of copyright is very important considering the intellectual property is concern. Protection of the right will contribute to the development and enrichment of human civilization and development as well.
