Political Weeds v. Wisdom

Political Weeds v. Wisdom

Almost every nation is in debt to few politicians in term of their valuable contributions for independence and nation building. Truth behind it lies in the thread of history whether in Europe, America, Asia, Africa or in Middle East. But in many countries present generation leaders are engaged in more hypocrisy realizing their own interest in the name of serving the nations.

This hyping trend is emphatically true almost in all countries with worst scenario in developing and least developed nations.

Europeans and Americans to a great extent are lucky enough that most of their leaders embraced natural death after substantial contribution for their nation building. But it is irony of fate that most of the greatest leaders in South Asia including Bangladesh were the victims of assassination by known or unknown assailants. Otherwise, the nation building process could have been more expedited enriching our position in all spheres especially in respect of life, liberty, equality, education, culture and justice in the global map of established nations.

African and Asian leaders had to invest more time and blood against the British colonial rule and other demons than the Americans or any other nations combated. Bangladesh did the same twice as the history of the country was integrated with India and Pakistan.

However, the South Africans feel themselves most fortunate in the earth with the blossomed light of versatile leadership of Nelson Mandela died recently. They realized the pre-apartheid tragedy of democracy and leadership and in the post-apartheid period after the release of iconic democratic leader Mandela they have harvested the blessings of unity, concession and diversity keeping widespread racism and division into oblivion.

After the shattering demise of Bangabandhu and Ziaur Rahman blame game and conspiracy theory have crippled into the attitudes of our politicians of whom most are either politically corrupt or ethically defunct. We have seen the role of military dictators and the elected dictators with rubber stamp like role of President smashing down the democratic values and culture. Lacking of integrity and sacrificing mentality of the incumbent political leaders of the country are the most pressing concerns for all sorts of existing stalemates of the nation.

These politicians always maintain double standard in their words and works reversing the ground norm that the interest of a party is of priority than person and interest of the nation is of priority than a party. Feudal and seasonal politicians are adding insult to the injuries.

Politics is the only capital to many politicians and democracy is a grocery based goods to their followers who are in infighting centering their own interests in the guise of public interest and public safety. Three ‘M’s (Money, Muscles and Machine) de facto model of third world country’s political culture has dragged our nation to the realm of economic and cultural devastation. Blood thirstiness and power mongering politics is the root cause of all evils in the country branding politicians as the weeds of galaxy and demanding afresh commitment for rejuvenation.

We are in urgent necessity of political transformation in order to save Bangladesh, a darling child of nature, keeping the bud of democracy alive, nurturing it towards maturity amidst the escort of patriotism, nationalism, tolerance and mutual respect.

In the process of turning over a new leaf for change our politicians need to be imbibed with the spirit of sacrifice inculcating the idea that in danger leaders are to be in front and behind in celebration for victory.

If they fail to indoctrinate such culture in the near future then the democracy we obtained from the autocrat in the aftermath of mass movements in 1990 will be nipped in the bud. In striving to transform the nation towards the beckon of hope of with democracy and prosperity our leaders should keep in mind that both western and oriental politicians have taught that knowledge without character, politics without principle, wealth without work and worship without sacrifice are meaningless.

The British great politician Winston Churchill once said the criteria of leadership. Restatement of his words implies that a true leader is s/he who knows what will happen tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, in the coming week, month, year and even decade. If politician’s prior idea reflects the happenings then s/he is a pragmatic one in the arena of politics.

George Washington after being elected as the first and second President of America his party men urged him to be a President candidate for the third time but he denied humbly replying that leadership must not be confined rather new leadership must be created to help guide the nation in the wake of demands of successive generations.

The Americans valued the words of this visionary leader considering his wisdom and foresightedness. Can our Prime Minister and domestic leader of the opposition or the de facto leader of the opposition do something miracle to save the nation from the grudge and clutch of evil politicians showing a perpetual solution to our crisis oriented democracy?

Let’s wish that politicians must use politics as the art of looking for trouble and finding remedies based on principles not on fallacies reflecting wisdom not greed. Since the journey of democracy is startled in our beloved country they must practice and teach every stakeholder that in democracy process is more significant than its outcome. Former US President Thomas Jefferson predicted future happiness for Americans lies in the prevention of the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

It is argued that politics is a show biz of ugly people and politicians are the weeds of the galaxy. But the narrow contention cannot survive in many parts of the world where politicians were the caravan of truth, beckon of hope and pioneer of solving problems prioritizing the needs of society. When politicians move forward with the words and true practice of wisdom and charismatic leadership then there is tiny chance of using odd adjectives against them. Telling the truth, leaders in all nations irrespective of continents have forgotten the art of leadership underscoring the needs for inculcating political values and virtues just for meagre self interest or party interest.

Lastly, any prediction is tough to match the difficulties of the turbulent storms of politics. Let’s end with the quote of great Abraham Lincoln who opines “the dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.”
