Japan to help Bangladesh update laws

DHAKA: Japan government will help Bangladesh modernize and up-to-date the existing acts and will provide assistance in ensuring security to the investors.

Japan justice minister Katsutoshi Kaneda came up with the assertion while holding a meeting with Bangladesh law minister Anisul Huq in Tokyo on Monday (October 17).

Kaneda said Japan government will provide all sorts of assistance to modernize the judiciary of Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Anisul Huq termed Japan as a cordial friend of Bangladesh. He also mentioned about the steps that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken to uproot corruption and establish good governance, especially rule of law, in society.

The Bangladesh law minister held another meeting with Shinichi Kitaoka, president of JICA at its headquarters. The JICA president assured Anisul Huq about continuing their cooperation in the development of Bangladesh.

Law minister assured the JICA president about providing impeccable security to its representatives working in different development projects and about providing legal assistances to Japanese investors in Bangladesh.

Anisul Huq also expressed sorrows about the Japanese who were killed in an attack at Holey Artisan Bakery restaurant in Dhaka and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Earlier on Sunday (October 16), Anisul Huq had a meeting with Hiroshima mayor Matsui Kazumi, Osaka chief prosecutor Kazumine Terawaki, Japan Supreme Court Justice Toshimitsu Yamazaki and Law Training and Research Institute director general Sakuma Tatsuya.

Secretary to legislative and parliamentary affairs division of the ministry of law, justice and parliamentary affairs Shahidul Haque, law and justice division secretary Abu Saleh Sheikh Mohammad Zahirul Haque, joint secretary Bikash Kumar Saha, minister’s personal secretary M Masum were, among others, present in the meeting.

Anisul Huq left Dhaka to visit Japan on October 11 and he is expected to return country on October 18.
