DHAKA: The High Court (HC) upheld death sentence for Redwanul Azad Rana, a former student of North South University (NSU) and Faisal Bin Nayeem alias Dip for killing Blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider.
HC gave consent with the whole verdict delivered by Judge Court in the case. Consequently, the orders that awarded life term to Maksur Helal Anik and 10-year imprisonment to Ehsan Reza Rumman, Nayeem Murad and Nafiz Imtiaz each have been upheld.
Besides, the order that asked Tk5,000 fine from each of the accused is also uphold and more six-month jail have been ordered, in default.
The court also uphold the orders that handed over five-year imprisonment and fine Tk.5,000 for Mufti Jasimuddin Rahmani, chief of Ansarullah Bangla Team, and three-year imprisonment and fine Tk2,000 for Sadman Yasir Mahmud, another accused in the case.
The court also ordered more six-month and two-month imprisonment for Jasimuddin and Sadman respectively; if the fine remains unpaid.
An HC bench comprised of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Md Jahangir Hossain passed the verdict Sunday (April 2), upon death reference and appeal in a case filed for Blogger Rajib killing.
The court rejected appeal from seven accused including Faisal and Rana.
On Feb 15 2013, blogger and Ganajagaran Mancha activist Rajib was hacked to death near his Mirpur residence at the capital.
In January 2017, the court kept its verdict pending after concluding hearings of the death references and appeals.
Detective Branch pressed charges on Ansarullah Bangla Team chief and seven North South University (NSU) students in January 2014 in the case filed by the slain blogger's father.
The trial began in March the same year after the court indicted the eight.
On Dec 31, 2016, a speedy trial tribunal found all of them guilty.
