RANGPUR: A Rangpur court has awarded jail until death to a person and 10 years imprisonment to his wife for killing a 10-year old child named Himel of Khalifapara area in the district.

Judge of the Additional District and Session Court-1 Chand Mohammad Abdul Alim AL Razi delivered the verdict on Tuesday (April 11) in presence of the convicts.

The convicts are Maruf Hasan Manik and his wife Runa Akhter Bristy of Khalifapara area in Rangpur.

The court also fined Tk. 50,000 each, in default, two years more imprisonment for Manik and three years for Bristy.

Additional public prosecutor (APP) Abdus Sattar moved for the state, while Advocate Basunia Ariful Haque moved for the defendants.    

According to the case statement, the couple on November 11 in 2011 strangulated Himel in night and concealed the body in their home. Later, they over phone demanded of Himel’s father to give Tk. four lakh as ransom    

Police recovered the body on November 14 and arrested the couple on November 15 from Nagaon.
