LAKSHMIPUR: A district court on Thursday (July 27) sentenced life term imprisonment to two people in a rape case in Lakshmipur.

Lakshmipur Additional District and Sessions Judge Saidur Rahman Gazi also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, in default, six more months in prison.

The convicts are Mainuddin, son of one Delwar Hossain of Shakchar village in sadar upazila and his sister-in-law Halima Khatun, wife of one Nurul Islam, from the same house.

Judge court’s additional public prosecutor (APP) Abul Bashar told Banglanews that the convicts were presence during the verdict was passed. 

APP said the court also directed the Deputy Commissioner to rear the 11-year-old daughter of the victim who became pregnant due to the rape incident.

According to case statement, the rape victim was a cousin of convict Mainuddin. On April 10 in 2005, Mainuddin, with the assistance of Halima Khatun, rapped her and promised to marry her. Later when the girl got pregnant, he disavowed the whole thing. 

On October 30 in 2005, the seven-month pregnant victim then filed a rape case with the Lakshmipur sadar thana. On November 21 in 2015, police submitted the charge-sheet in court.
