DHAKA: A Dhaka court has sentenced student of Asia Pacific University Mezbaul Alam to life term imprisonment for killing Daffodil University student Setu Sarker in 2013.

Judge of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal Shahed Noor Uddin pronounced the verdict on Sunday (December 31) in the presence of the convict.

The court also fined the 25-year-old convict Tk. 50,000, in default, one year more imprisonment.

Mezbaul was also sentenced for raping Setu Sarker before killing her. The court awarded 10 years imprisonment to Mezbaul on charge of rape and fined Tk. 25,000, in default, six months more imprisonment.  

According to the case statement, Mezbaul on August 16 in 2013 proposed sexual relationship with his friend Setu. The Daffodil University student refused the proposal of the Asia Pacific University student.

Setu was a first year student of electronics and engineering department at the Daffodil University. She had hailed from Gaibandha. Mezbaul hails from Dinajpur. He used to live in a rented residence at Hazaribagh area.

Later, Mezbaul raped his freeing before hacking her to death with a sharp weapon. When a friend of the victim attempted to stop him, the killer attempted to electrocute them to death.

The following day, Setu’s uncle Ratan Kumar Sarker filed a case with the Hazaribagh Police Station in the city. However, police arrested Mezbaul on the day of incident.
