SIRAJGANJ: A Sirajganj court on Tuesday (Jan 22) convicted four people, including husband, and sentenced them to death for killing a woman in the municipality in 2011.
After examining the records and witnesses, women and children Repression Tribunal Judge Fazle Khoda Nazir handed down the verdict around 1:00pm.
The condemned convicts are—Subir Kumar Roy, husband of Sumi Rani Roy, brothers-in-law Dr Sushil Roy and Sunil Kumar Roy and their paternal uncle Manoronjon Roy.
All of them are on the run since filing of the case.
Anwar Parvez Limon, Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) of the tribunal, confirmed the matter.
According to the prosecution, the convicts strangled and beaten Sumi Rani Roy, daughter of Gupinath Biswas of Tangail town, to death following an altercation among family members over dowry on January 12 in 2001.
Later, a general diary was filed with Sadar Police Station citing that Sumi Rani Roy committed suicide by hanging herself.
As evidence of murder was found during autopsy of the woman’s body, Monirul Islam, the then Sub Inspector of the police station, later filed a murder case against the husband of the deceased and his family.
