HC sets deadline to dispose of drug cases

DHAKA:   The High Court has set a six-month deadline for disposal of drug cases which were taken into cognizance by the concerned trial courts.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman gave the order while hearing a bail petition in a drug case on Tuesday (February 5).

Lawyer Md Fazlur Rahman moved for the defendant while Assistant Attorney General Yousuf Mahmud Morshed argued for the state.

Yousuf Mahmud Morshed said, “The ruling asks Deputy Commissioner, Superintend of Police (SP), Officer-in-Charge, and Investigation Official to cooperate at their level best in order to dispose of the cases within six months. Failure to do so results in interrogation.”

The Registrar General and the Law Ministry were asked to issue to order to the concerned, Yousuf Mahmud Morshed also said.

Police detained a man by the name of Mizanur Rahman Barei, hailing from Madaripur, for possessing 600 yaba pills on December 1, 2015. Later, a case was filed under narcotics act. He has been in prison since then. So far, no witness was asked to testify to the court. Later, he filed a bail petition with the high court, said Yousuf Mahmud Morshed.

Mizanur Rahman Barei was given bail, Yousuf Mahmud Morshed further said.
