Cop among 2 to die for killing girls after rape

KISHOREGANJ: A court here on Sunday (Feb 17) sentenced two people to death and six other to four years jail term each for killing two college girls after rape at a Dhaka hotel in 2008.

The death-row convicts are Police Constable Maniruzzaman Monir alias Halud, 30 and his friend Shamim Hawlader of Jhalakathi. The court also fined them Tk 100,000 each.

Other condemned convicts are Mostafa Mir, Abul Hossain, Babul Mia, Joynal Abedin, Kabir Hossain and Dilbar Hossain.  The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, they have to serve six months more jail term.

According to the prosecution, Police Constable Maniruzzaman and his friend Shamim kidnapped two college girls –Afroza Akther Urmi, daughter of advocate Nurunnabi of Kishoreganj town and her friend Afroza Akhter, daughter of School teacher Abu Bakkar Siddique of this town on July 17, 2018.

Later, the convicts took them to a hotel in Dhaka and murdered them after rape. Then they fled the hotel leaving the bodies of the victims. 

Hotel authorities with the help of its employees dumped the bodies to two water bodies in the capital city. Later, police recovered bodies and burial of them was held in Dhaka as unidentified after autopsy.

Abu Bakkar Siddique, father of one of the victims, filed a murder case with Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station.

Later, the case was handed over to Detective Branch of Police.

DB police submitted the charge sheet to the court on April 29, 2010.

After examining all the records and witnesses, Kishorganj Women and children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Kiran Shankar Halder handed down the verdict.

Of the eights convicts, five were tried in absentia as they are on the run.

Special PP of the tribunal advocate MA Afzol confirmed the matter to Banglanews.
