Bangladesh to execute Saudi official murder convict tonight

DHAKA: Saiful Islam Mamun, death row convict for killing Saudi embassy official Khalaf Al Ali in 2012, would be executed at Kashimpur High Security jail on Sunday (March 3) night.

Jail superintendent Md Shahjahan Ahmed said all set for the execution of death row convict Saiful Islam for killing of Saudi embassy official. 

Following his conviction and death penalty, Saiful Islam has been kept at condemn cell at Kashimpur High Security jail. 

Dr Dewan Mahmud Humayun Kabir, Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur, told Banglanews that the death penalty given to Saiful Islam for killing of Saudi embassy official will be executed tonight. District administration has completed all kinds of preparatory works.

In reply to a review petition, the Supreme Court on October 8, 2018 upheld Saiful Islam Mamun's death penalty for killing Saudi embassy official Khalaf Al Ali in 2012. 

Earlier, the Appellate Division on November 1, 2017 upheld the full verdict given by the High Court (HC) in the sensational murder case.

The HC sentenced Saiful Islam Mamun to death while life term imprisonment for Al Amin, Akbar Ali Lalu alias Rony and Rafiqul Islam Khokon. Another accused, Selim Chowdhury alias Selim was acquitted. 

Earlier, Dhaka-4 Speedy Trial Tribunal ordered death penalties to all the five accused, in December 2012.

Later, the High Court upheld the death sentence for Saiful given by the tribunal.

Besides, death-penalties were commuted to life-terms for Al Amin, Akbar and Rafiqul while Selim was acquitted.

However, Khalaf Al Ali, 45, the embassy official, was shot before a house holding no#19/B, Road#120, in the diplomatic area of Gulshan, at around 01:00am March 6, 2012.

He died at the hospital several hours later.

Law enforcers detained Saiful, Akbar and Al Amin from the Gaowair area of Dhaka’s Dakshinkhan on June 4 the same year.
