DHAKA: The High Court directed Suprobhat Paribahan to provide Tk 10 lakh within seven days to Abrar Ahmed who was ran over by a bus of the transport group.
Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, a road safety campaigner and a first year student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), was run over by a bus at Nodda on Progati Sarani area on Tuesday (March 19).
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam on Wednesday (March 20) passed the order after hearing a petition seeking compensation to the victim’s family.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned and Suprobhat Paribahan to explain within four weeks why they should not be directed to compensate Tk 5 crore to Abrar’s family and why continuous failure of the government to prevent road accidents should not be declared illegal.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal filed the petition and deputy attorney general AKM Zahid Sarwar Kajol moved for the state.
The HC directed BRTA, Director of Road Accident Research Institute of BUET and additional commissioner (traffic) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to give a detailed report of that accident.
Earlier on Tuesday (March 19), Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, 20, a first year student of International Relations Department of the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), was killed as a recklessly driven city bus ran over him in city Nodda area on Pragati Sarani in the capital city.
