DHAKA: The High Court directed chairman of the Chattogram port and the port authorities to evict all illegal structures from the bank of Karnaphuli River in its area.
The bench of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal on Tuesday (April 9) passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The court also asked them to submit the report within 30 days before it.
After the order, petitioner’s lawyer Manzil Murshed said some illegal structures still standing, as those are located in the area under jurisdiction of Chattogram port authorities.
So, a petition was filed today seeking HC directives to chairman of Chattogram port and the port authorities, he said.
The court also set May 19 for next order regarding the matter, said Manzil Murshed
On August 16, 2016, the HC ordered an eviction of illegal settlements within six months, but the administration only started the drive on February 4 this year, a move hailed by environment activists.
High Court in its directive ordered Chattogram District Administration (CDA) to remove 2,181 structures illegally built on the banks of the River Karnaphuli in Chattogram.
Recently, some illegal structures on Karnaphuli river bank have been removed as per a HC directive given in 2016. But the eviction drive stopped just after few days.
