RAJSHAHI: A court here sentenced three persons to death for killing Rajshahi University teacher Prof AKM Shafiul Islam Lilon in 2014.
Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Anup Kumar Roy on Monday (April 15) passed the order.
The court also acquitted eight others accused from the murder charge.
The death-row convicts are: Juba Dal leaders Abdus Samad Pintu, Ariful Islam Manik and Sabuj Sheikh.
As per the case statement, RU sociology department professor Shafiul was hacked to death by unidentified assailants near the campus at Choddopai area under Matiher Police Station in Rajshahi city on 15 November, 2014.
Shafiul was known as a progressive teacher and a Lalon songs fan.
On the following day, RU registrar professor Mohammad Entajul Haque filed the murder case accusing unknown persons.
Later on November 30, 2015, Inspector Rezaus Sadik of Detective Branch in RMP submitted the charge sheet accusing 11 people, including the four convicts.
After examining the recorded depositions of 34 witnesses and other relevant evidences, the tribunal handed down the verdict in presence of all of the accused.
