DHAKA: The High Court on Tuesday (April 16) asked Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to settle the petition filed by Suprobhat Paribahan seeking permission for plying from Uttara Raniganj to Sadarghat (route no A-138) within 30 days.
The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the rule after hearing the petition of managing director of Suprobhat Private Limited.
Lawyer Abu Yeahia Dulal moved for the petition.
Earlier on April 1, Suprobhat authority filed a petition to BRTA to get its permission for plying of its buses and minibuses in the city road.
Later on April 8, they sent a legal notice to BRTA for the settlement of their appeal. Then, Suprobhat sought the High Court intervention in the issue.
Earlier on March 20, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has suspended operations of all buses of Suprobhat and Jabal-e-Noor on Dhaka routes until further directives.
Route permits of the two bus services have been cancelled for indefinite period as per Article 72 of Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1983.
The decision was confirmed to media, in a letter signed by BRTA Deputy Director Engr Shafiquzzaman Bhuiyan.
However, BRTA banned plying of the buses of Jabal-e-Noor and Suprobhat amid protests a day after a Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student was crushed to death by a bus of Suprobhat Paribahan in Pragati Sarani area of Dhaka’s Nodda on March 19.
Two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College were crushed to death by a bus of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan in Kurmitola area of Dhaka on July 29, 2018.
Authorities then suspended plying of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan amid protests over the deaths. But, the same buses reportedly came to roads again months after the crash.
