Judicial body formed to probe advocate’s death

DHAKA: The High Court on Wednesday (May 8) ordered to form a judicial committee led by the chief judicial magistrate of Panchagarh to investigate the death of Advocate Palash Roy inside the jail.

Panchagarh deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and the jail super of Panchagarh have been asked to provide necessary assistance to the judicial committee.

A HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order following the writ petition filed by Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon.

The HC bench also set June 23 for delivering its next order.

The court also issued a rule upon the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks why their failure to give security to lawyer Palash Roy at the jail should not be declared illegal.

Home Secretary, IG (Prison), Rangpur Division's DIG (Prison) and Jailer of Panchagarh jail were made respondent to the rule.

Palash was detained for making remarks against the prime minister and the local administration at a human chain held in front of the office of Panchagarh deputy commissioner on March 25.

Later, Palash was handed over to the police and later sent to jail by a Panchagarh court.

On April 26, the jail authorities rescued Palash from the toilet of Panchagar district jail with burn injuries all over his body.

Later on April 30, Palash succumbed to his burn injuries at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
