SC rejects ACC plea in Jahalom case Jahalom at the court.

DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has rejected a plea filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) seeking a stay on the High Court rule regarding former jute mill worker Jahalom who was wrongfully imprisoned for last three years.

The High Court earlier issued a suo-moto rule in the case.

The Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order Monday (May 13).

Now, a hearing will take place at the HC on the suo moto rule.

Lawyer Md Khurshid Alam Khan moved for the ACC while senior lawyer AM Amin Uddin moved for the other side. Lawyer Amit Dasgupta accompanied the latter.

Jahalom, who had worked at a jute mill in Narsingdi, was grilled for three years, after he was wrongly recognized as one Abu Salek, an accused in a case over embezzling money from Sonali Bank.

ACC’s responsibility got questioned after Jahalom was released from Kashimpur Central Prison-2 in Gazipur on February 4.

An HC bench of Justice Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader summoned four persons including the ACC officials and defendants of the case, to explain about the matter.

On April 17, the HC sought report from the ACC on who were responsible for the incident that happened to Jahalom.
