RAJSHAHI: Thirty four-year-old coconut seller Sajal Mia was released from Rajshahi Central Jail Wednesday (June 12) night after nearly one and a half months of 'wrongful' imprisonment.
He was released around 9 at the night.
Rajshahi Central Jail Senior Jail Superintendent Halima Khatun confirmed the matter to Banglanews Thursday (June 13).
On Wednesday, Rajshahi Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 1 Judge Md Monsur Alam exempted Sajal from charges.
At the same time, Shah Makhdum Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Masud Parvez was served a show-cause notice to explain why Sajal was arrested instead of his life-term convict sibling Fazal.
The OC was ordered to appear before the court within seven days to explain the 'mistake'.
Now 45-year-old Selim alias Fazal, Sajal's elder brother also resident of Chhoto Bonogram Pashchim Para area, was sentenced to life in prison in a case filed under Women and Children Prevention Act in 2009. Since then, he has been absconding.
Police, on April 30, arrested Sajal and produced him before the court as his brother. He was sent to jail on the same day after attesting him as Fazal in the arrest report and through affidavit by two deponents.
Sajal filed an appeal by a lawyer seeking bail on May 26, saying he isn't the convict.
Now the court will deliver its next judgment after receiving the reply from the OC.
