2 get life for killing Sri Lankan housewife

DHAKA:  A Dhaka court sentenced two persons to life in prison for killing a Sri Lankan housewife at Shyampur area of the capital.

Judge Sheikh Hafijur Rahman of Special Judge Court of Dhaka also fined them Taka 30,000 each on Wednesday (August 7).

The convicts were-- Mofiz Uddin Sarkar and Md. Abu Jaher Khan. Both of them are absconding. But after the verdict, a warrant has been issued against them.

The court, however, acquitted Abul Hossain--another accused in the case.

According to case statement, Sri Lankan citizen Suhara Ummah formed a relationship with Jahirul Islam alias Hafiz while living in Kuwait. They got hitched. Then, they started living in Shyampur area of Dhaka.

The tenant Mafiz along with his friend went to Suhara Ummah’s house and strangled her to death on 27 January of 2004.  The following day, a case was filed with Shyampur police station.

Investigation officer of the case and Sub Inspector of Shyampur police station Suhel Ahmed submitted the charge sheet to the court against 3 persons.
