9 to die, 4 get life for killing man in Cumilla

CHATTOGRAM: A Chattogram court on Monday (Oct 14) awarded death penalty to nine people and life term to four others for killing a man in a case filed with Daudkandi police station of Cumilla in 2013.

Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Md Abdul Halim passed the order after examining records and witnesses depositions.

Three people were acquitted from the murder charge as allegation brought against them was not proved. 

Tribunals’ PP and also general secretary of the Chittagong Lawyers Association Ayub Khan said the death-row convicts are Sajib, Rajiv, Harun, Shaon, Amin, Robu, Momin, Abu Taher and Mohsin.

The lifers are Mottin, Shah Paran, Shamim and Khokon Mia while acquitters are Nayan Mia, Moslem Mia and Bilal.

According to the case statement, the convicted persons hacked Jahangir Alam, a businessman of Gauripur area of Daudkandi upazila in Cumilla, to death on December 1, 2013 following dispute with rivals. 

Later the case had been transferred to Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal from Cumilla court in 2015.

The court recorded depositions from 13 witnesses in different times in the case.
