DHAKA: Seven persons were sentenced to death while another one acquitted in the Holey Artisan attack case.
Dhaka Anti-terrorism Special Tribunal Judge Mohammad Mujibur Rahman delivered the verdict on Wednesday (Nov 27) noon.
The death row convicts are– Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi, alleged recruiter of the café attackers; Aslam Hossain alias Rash, one of the alleged planners; Abdus Sabur Khan alias Sohel Mahfuz, reported grenade supplier; and Hadisur Rahman Sagor; Rakibul Hasan Regan, so-called religious trainer; and Shariful Islam Khaled and Mamunur Rashid Ripon.
The court acquitted another accused Mizanur Rahman alias Boro Mizan in the case.
Earlier around 10:15am, the vehicle carrying all eight accused in the case taken to the court premises amid tight security.
However, security was beefed up in and around the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court area ahead of the verdict in the case.
Members of law enforcement agencies took position in the court area since morning. They allowed people to enter the court premises after thorough check.
Militants killed 20 people in the attack carried out at Holey Artisan café in city’s Gulshan on July 1, 2016.
Police filed the case under the anti-terror act with Gulshan Police Station.
The trial initiated on November 26, 2018 by framing charges against the eight accused– Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi, Rakibul Hasan Regan, Rashedul Islam alias Rash, Sohel Mahfuz, Mizanur Rahman alias Boro Mizan, Hadisur Rahman Sagar, Shariful Islam and Mamunur Rashid.
