DHAKA: Former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain has been jailed for eight years in a case filed under Digital Security Act.
Judge Ash Sams Joglul Hossain of the Cyber Tribunal of Dhaka announced the verdict against Moazzem on Thursday (November 28).
The tribunal also fined him Tk 15 lakh, in default of which he has to serve six more months in jail.
Police arrested the OC from Shahbag area on June 16.
The complaint was made against the OC for video recording of Nusrat Jahan Rafi’s tearful statement at the police station. Later, the video went viral in social media.
According to the case statement, the OC called Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, to the police station on March 27 after she had filed a case against principal Maulana Siraj Ud Doula, for sexually harassing her.
During interrogation at the police station, he asked her offensive and unpleasant questions over the incident. Later, the OC spread the video in social media.
On April 6, Nusrat was set ablaze allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against Principal Siraj Ud Doula of the madrasa for sexually assaulting her in March.
On April 10, Nusrat lost her battle for life at burn and plastic surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
