Why illegal structures on Cox’s Bazar beach: HC

DHAKA: The High Court on Monday (Dec 9) issued a rule asking the government to explain within three months why directives should not be given to evict illegal structures set up on Cox’s Bazar sea beach.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman came up with the rule in response to a petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (Bela).

Advocate Minhajul Haque Chowdhury and Advocate Syed Ahmed Kabir moved for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Amit Talukdar stood for the state.

Besides, the HC issued a rule asking the government to explain within three months why the failure of the respondents to protect the hills and forest in Sadar, Maheshkhali, Teknaf, Ramu, Chokoria, Ukhiya and Pekua upazilas of the district should not be declared illegal.

Secretaries to the ministries, cabinet division, forest and environment, civil aviation and tourism, housing and public work, public administration and water resources and other officials concerned of the government were made respondents to the rule.
