A meeting between a delegation of European Union’s (EU) Missions in Bangladesh and the Election Commission (EC) was held on Wednesday (November 29) afternoon ahead of the national elections scheduled for January 7, 2024.
EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley led the team in the meeting that started at 3:00pm at EC building in the capital.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and other election commissioners are present in the meeting.
In the meeting, European Union (EU) Ambassador Charles Whiteley said he wants to see democratic, acceptable, peaceful and participatory parliamentary elections.
Charles Whiteley said, “There was a detailed exchange of views on the parliamentary elections. Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and his team participated in the open discussion. I have learned about the overall preparation of the election. We expect democratic, acceptable, peaceful and participatory elections in Bangladesh.
At this time he also commented that he did not want to take any questions. But when reporters asked if there had been any discussion about the polling environment, Whiteley simply thanked journalists and walked out.
The delegation members include Dr. Bernd Spanier, deputy head of mission, EU Delegation to Bangladesh, Sebastian Riger-Brown, political officer, EU Delegation to Bangladesh, Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexandra Berg Von Linde, Spanish Ambassador Francisco de Asís Benítez Salas, Italian Ambassador Antonio Alessandro, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands Irma van Dueren, Ambassador of Denmark Christian Brix Møller, Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy Gillaume Audren de Kerdrel, Deputy Head of Mission, Chargé d'Affaires at Embassy of Germany Jan Janowski.
