A Dhaka court on Tuesday (Oct 8) summoned Taposhee Tabassum Urmi to appear before judges in connection with her derogatory social media remarks against the July-August mass uprising, after a plea was filed at the court to accept a case against her.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain is yet to confirm if a defamation case will be lodged against Urmi, a recently suspended assistant commissioner, in response to the plea placed in this regard by a Gono Adhikar Parishad leader.

Earlier on Tuesday, the court had said it would rule on the matter later in the day.

On Saturday, Taposhee drew public attention by making anti-government posts and threatening Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus that his time was up.

Due to the inflammatory remarks, she was first made an officer-on-special duty (OSD). But on Monday, student protests forced authorities to suspend her and initiate disciplinary actions against her as her previous hateful Facebook posts came to light.

She categorically criticised the July-August student-people movement, and in one post, even labelled Abu Sayed, the first martyr of the anti-fascist movement, as a terrorist.
