Garment workers staged a protest by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway on Tuesday morning (March 11) demanding their overdue salaries.
As a result, traffic came to a standstill, causing severe inconvenience to thousands of commuters, according to the Gazipur Industrial Police.
The aggrieved workers alleged that they had not been paid for two months and took to the streets after multiple unfulfilled promises from the factory management.
In response, BSIS Apparels Ltd issued a notice saying that workers had exhibited disruptive behavior on factory premises the previous day, refusing to resume their duties despite repeated requests. The company deemed the work stoppage unauthorized.
Citing security concerns, the factory announced its closure starting Tuesday until conditions stabilize.
Gazipur Industrial Zone-2 Superintendent of Police AKM Zahirul Islam said that the workers protested and blocked the highway demanding unpaid wages and raising allegations of assault.
The police are trying to control the situation, he added.
