Garment workers protest in Gazipur, 12 factories shut down

Workers of a garment factory in the Bhogra area of Gazipur staged a protest on Monday morning (March 17), demanding unpaid wages. In response, authorities declared a holiday in 10 to 12 factories in the vicinity.

The demonstration began around 9:45 am when employees of Meem Garments took to the streets over wage arrears from the previous month.

According to police and local sources, the protesters later blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and attempted to vandalize nearby factories. They also urged workers from other factories to join the protest.

Upon receiving reports of the unrest, police and army personnel arrived at the scene to disperse the demonstrators and restore order.

The situation was brought under control shortly thereafter, and normalcy returned to the area.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Wahiduzzaman Raju of Gazipur Industrial Police-2 confirmed the incident.

According to him, workers had taken to the streets over unpaid wages.

"Police and army personnel intervened promptly, clearing the highway, which was blocked for approximately 20 minutes. Following the incident, factory authorities declared a holiday in 10 to 12 factories as a precautionary measure," he said.
