Shakib, 14 others barred from traveling abroad

A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on star cricketer and former national team captain Shakib Al Hasan along with 14 others in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation.

The order was passed on Monday (June 16) by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to the ACC application, Shakib and the others are under investigation for alleged irregularities and corruption involving the embezzlement of hundreds of crores of taka through illegal investments in the share market, in violation of government rules and securities laws.

The ACC also said there are reports that the accused are planning to flee the country, which could hamper the investigation.

Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh since playing his last match for the national team in India in October last year.

The other individuals named in the travel ban include Sub-Registrar of the Department of Cooperatives Md Abul Khayer, Kazi Sadia Hasan, Abul Kalam Madbor, Kanika Afroze, Mohammad Bashar, Sajed Madbor, Aleya Begum, Kazi Fuad Hasan, Kazi Farid Hasan, Shirin Akter, Javed A Matin, Md Zahed Kamal, Md Humayun Kabir, and Tanvir Nizam.

After hearing the petition, the court issued the travel ban to ensure proper investigation.
