SYLHET: A Sylhet court on Wednesday awarded death penalty to a man to and lifetime imprisonment to two others in the sensational industrialist Atikur Rahman killing case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Akbar Ali Mrdiha passed the order.

The death row convict is Shafiqur Rahman Shafiq, 32, son of Haji  Rahmat Ullah of Gonaktuli of Hazaribagh of Dhaka, while the lifetime awardees are Sumon alias Mama Sumon, 30, son of late Azmal Hossain of Lalito Mahon Das Lane of Dhaka, and Khokon, 30, son of late Sharif Mina.

The court also fined the lifetime awardees with Tk 10,000 each.

According to the case statement, the convicts killed Atikur inside a room of the city’s Hotel Anurag on November 29, 2010.  Victim’s father filed a murder case with Kotwali Thana following the day of the killing. 

Later, police identified the killers scrutinizing the close circuit camera TV footage and filed charge sheet on June 28, 2011 and the court delivered the verdict at last.

Of the convicts, Sumon is in jail and Shafiq and Khokon are fugitive.
