SATKHIRA: A suspected robber was killed and two lawmen were also injured in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Avoytola village in Tala upazila of the district early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 38, son of Babar Ali while injured constables are Ajibur and Kabir Hossain.

Patkelghata Thana officer-in-charge Tarikul Islam confirmed the matter to banglanews.

He said police arrested Rafiqul Islam, an accused of 12 robbery cases, from his village home on Tuesday afternoon. Later, a team of police along with Rafiqul went to Avoytola village for further investigation at night. At that time, Rafiqul’s cohorts opened fire at police and the lawmen also retaliated with gunshots in self-defense.

After a 20-minute-long gunfight, robbers fled the spot. Later, police rushed injured Rafiqul to Satkhira Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police also recovered a shutter gun and two rounds of bullets from the spot.
